The Weimar Republic in Berlin lasted from 1919 to 1933, when Hitler came to power. It was a time known for it's flourishing arts, sciences, and social expression, including among LGBT people. The cabarets in Berlin were a place where all of these elements exploded, and as Hitler began to rise, they became a place of resistance.

Actor and writer Jeremy Lawrence created English versions of many of the cabaret songs from the time, and he performs them in a one man show, "Lavender Songs: A Queer Weimar Berlin Cabaret."

The show premiered in New York City in 2007, but Lawrence revived it in 2016, as a way to channel his own anxieties about the presidential campaign. Lavender Songs is currently playing at Pangea in New York City.
